Procrastination is something you do, not someone you are…
When you were born, the doctor didn’t place you in your mother’s arms and say, “Congratulations, it’s a… procrastinator!”
Procrastinating is something we do, not who we are, yet we often find ourselves saying, “I am a procrastinator.” I remember years ago doing exactly that.
I’d complain that I was so good at starting things, but rarely at finishing them. I’d joke that I had a gift for finding 10 things to do when I really needed to focus on a single task.
Procrastination always felt like the problem I needed to solve. It was the reason I couldn’t make positive changes stick.
That belief does seem to make sense. After all, if we’re stuck in procrastination, we can’t take the action that’s necessary to create lasting change.
However, as I began to look more deeply at procrastination, I realized that procrastination is not what prevents us from creating lasting change.
Procrastination is simply a symptom of deeper challenges we’re trying to avoid, and it’s those deeper issues that we ultimately have to address in order to create lasting change.
Here are some common reasons why we procrastinate. Take a moment to reflect on what feels true for you.
• Procrastination can be a symptom of fear.
• Procrastination can be our intuition telling us now is not the right time.
• Procrastination can be our way to seek comfort when something feels difficult.
• Procrastination can be a way to give ourselves a break when we don’t have healthy self-care routines in place.
Instead of focusing on trying to rid ourselves of procrastination, we need to get quiet and hear the wisdom behind it.
