We are pleased to be inviting you to participate in an historic project. The field of Energy Psychology has matured to the point that we believe we are ready for a presence within the APA (American Psychological Association).
An increasing number of clinicians are using energy therapies in their practices. A paper critical of the field of Energy Psychology nevertheless found when surveying therapists that 42% reported using these methods (Gaudiano, Brown & Miller, 2012). More than 100 papers on EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) have been published in peer reviewed journals and are listed on the EFT research bibliography (Research.EFTuniverse.com; for other methods see http://energypsych.org/research).
The primary organizations within the field are now establishing a Special Interest Section (SIS) within Division 29 (Psychotherapy). Most Divisions of the APA start out as Special Interest Sections within existing Divisions, and we expect our SIS to grow into the Energy Psychology Division. The formation of a new SIS requires the signatures of 10% of the members of a Division.
That is where you come in. As a psychologist, we hope you are or will become a member of APA and of Division 29 and sign the petition. We already have dozens of signed petitions, but we need 150. Your participation is critical to meeting this goal. Here is a link to the petition and instructions for becoming an APA member and a Division 29 member if you are not already a member of one or both.
We believe that an Energy Psychology Special Interest Section, and eventually a Division, will give our field a much-needed voice within the APA. It will give us the visibility to share the potential of Energy Psychology with other members of the profession. It will also provide a platform from which to address the many critics and skeptics who have kept Energy Psychology out of primary care, vandalized the Wikipedia articles on the topic, obstructed the listing of Energy Psychology research on the APA Division 12 list of Empirically Validated Therapies, and otherwise prevented the healing potential of energy psychology from reaching the millions of people who seek treatment each day.
The establishment of a presence for Energy Psychology within the APA represents a significant milestone in the history of psychology. We urge you to sign this petition and circulate it to your psychologist colleagues asking them to do the same.
